The Dhow Sails is a permanent entrance sculpture created for Old Doha Port. Installed as a landmark gateway, the piece reinterprets the traditional sails of Qatari dhows through a contemporary architectural language, transforming a symbol of maritime heritage into a clean and monumental public gesture.
Chosen in its final white finish, the sculpture emphasizes light, shadow, and silhouette throughout the day. Its flowing vertical forms evoke sails filled by wind, creating a sense of movement, openness, and arrival. Rather than reproducing history literally, the project translates memory into form through proportion, rhythm, and abstraction.
Produced using advanced large-scale fabrication methods and engineered for outdoor permanence, the work reflects Studio Soumer’s approach of merging cultural references with contemporary making. The result is both a functional gateway and a sculptural identity marker for the port.
